been awfully quiet cuz i been so darn busy.... but for good reason.

Was on an awesome honeymoon with [info]jenny_1981 to Disney World from March 21 to 29. In a nutshell, spent 12-14 hours every day in the various parks on the property wearing out the soles of our feet and getting maximum thrills out of the rides.

Will write more soon, but i gotta get going soon to finish cleaning out the back bedroom to accept delivery of our new king-size bed on wednesday.

    FRED PHELPS IN ALBANY?
I just heard on the news that Phelps and his Westboro crew are bringing their homophobic road show into town. March 6 at Albany High and SUNY A? Anyone going to counterprotest these idiots?

    23rd anniversary Challenger explosion
23 years ago today, the Space Shuttle challenger exploded. By far the biggest media event/tragedy of my formative/schooling years, and an event that helped encourage me to follow engineering ultimately as my career.

I was in 11th grade awaiting physics class to begin after lunch. one by one, my classmates filed into the room telling me the news. Having been a gullible sort when i was younger, i thought they were playing a joke on me. When Mr. guarracino, the teacher, came in and verified their story, i was still a little skeptical. When Dr Glick, assistant principal, announced it on the PA system a few minutes later, I finally believed the story unequivocally.

I also remembered earlier that morning having breakfast at home, I was reading the article in the New York Times magazine about the teacher in space program and asked my father why he didn't apply. 5 hours later, i became glad he didnt.

Hard to believe its been 23 years. feels like yesterday.

For the few Hunterites on my friends list:
Maria LoFrumento, former principal of my high school (Hunter College High School) passed away Monday at 84. She retired in 1984, when i was in the 9th grade.

    Obit here: http://obits.nj.com/StarLedger/DeathNotices.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonId=123411975

I remembered her as the small woman who wielded great respect.

    Black Friday savages
    http://www.newsday.com/news/local/nassau/ny-limart1129,0,167903.story

Mobs rushing for sales the morning after? Are times really that desperate or people so stupid/uncaring as to allow this to happen?

Police work shoddy. If I was in charge of the crime scene, I'd have the store immediately sealed off with everyone inside and if the trampling had occurred within range of a security camera, no one leave until each person compared against images shown in incident. If there was a clear match, those individuals would be arrested for manslaughter. Even if it meant arresting over 100. Even if most were later turned loose, it would serve as an example.

    WalMart better get good lawyers.

New law: stores required to issue rainchecks for all special events, and especially ALL black friday events.

Last I checked, I was able to look up white pages for anyone's listed address easily on the internet, on sites like www.four11.com and such.

Now every site wants $$$. WTF?

Is there a totally free white pages directory left online?

    seven weeks part II
I must add an apology. Due to the interval between posts and even logins here, I have missed many events or announcements here. Everything from birthdays to family tragedies. I often respond a seemingly ludicrous amount of time later. I apologize for such delays and silences. I think about you all but my online fun time is at a premium at the moment. I am also somewhat more reachable on facebook at present. I can always be emailed at rev1969@gmail.com for the best way to reach me on the internet. i still check my email several times most days.

    My best wishes to all...

    Seven weeks since an update...
This might have been my quietest stretch yet. How uncommon!

Busy with life, work, extracurricular pursuits.

[info]jenny_1981 will be moving here in less than 3 weeks so gotta continue the apartment preparations. That's been a task in itself, but one I am all too happy to accomplish.

Obama wins! yes! For once, USA gets it right. Gotta admit, the election process was fun, from the media spoofs to the Obama party at Jillian's downtown to being one of well over 52,000,000 to help put him in the white house!

Wedding in t-minus 102 days and so much to do, so later....

    I thought 777 was a LUCKY number!
In vegas, 777 usually brings jackpot on a slot machine or a blackjack table. Irony is that 777 is the worst point drop in Dow history...

Sorry, GOPers- Pelosi is not the reason the bill failed yesterday. Whether it was wise or not, she did tell it like it is in her speech. Regardless, it still came down to the votes. If some in the majority of the republicans who voted NO did so out of spite rather than their own judgment on the merits of the bailout package, then they are unfit of being politicians or even first-graders.

And adjourning until after Rosh Hashanah? Much as I appreciate other religions and cultures, I am pretty sure jewish members make up a minority of congress. If the fate of the markets lie in the balance, at least get the goy quorum together to continue to hammer something out. Heck, if I was in congress and it was Christmas, and 1.2 trillion got lost in a SINGLE DAY because of a failed vote, you better damn well believe I'll be putting off the gift unwrapping and the goose carving for a wee bit...

You're just going to make more anti-semites out of wannabe rednecks who already don't give a flying f**k that their GOP party is really flushing the country down the toilet.

    NED HARKNESS 1919-2008
    http://www.rpiathletics.com/news/2008/9/19/MHOCK_0919081903.aspx?path=hockey

Ned Harkness was a Hall of Fame Hockey Coach who coached RPI to an NCAA title in 1954, Cornell to titles in 1967 and 1970, and Union, as well as an NHL team for a time. He also coached the RPI lacrosse team to an NCAA championship a few years before the hockey's title.

I met him a couple of times- in 2004 (at the 50th anniv of the championship team) and in 2006 (when his name was hoisted to the rafters on a banner). I rmeember him saying in the former meeting that he'd recruit me for my size (6'4", 230+ lbs). Gotta find the photos.

When i was an undergrad, some APO bros were talking about voting "Splunge". I don't know why this occurred to me 18 years later, but I decided to Wiki it.

Oddly enough, this is what I got:

A town in Mississippi? Now I'm even more confused.

    DINOSAUR BBQ
DINOSAUR BBQ, with restaurants in Rochester, Syracuse and Harlem, will open a fourth restaurant in..... TROY!

More specifically, the waterfront building that most recently housed "Fresno's", and before that, The Castaway.

    Expected opening late spring 2009.

For those in the Albany area, this is excellent culinary news. For those who like/love Dinosaur BBQ, this will be another reason to visit us in troy!

Looking to launch and run a weekly trivia event of my own there once it opens. Stay tuned...

    Digital TV question
Two TVs side by side, hooked to the same cable network and tuned in to the same channel. The TVs may or may not be the same model.

Usually, the images are synced as expected. But I have seen lags between the units ranging between a second or so to about 6-7 seconds to as high as TWENTY-TWO SECONDS!

The signal is supposed to travel at the speed of light. 22 seconds would be almost eight round trips to the moon. Not the difference between two televisions a mere 8-10 feet apart!

    How is this even possible?

Happy 63rd anniversary to my Grandparents today!

When I get married next year, I'll be approaching 40. That means after 63 years, I'd be 103, and Jenny would be a young 91. :)

    On Palin
Watched the GOP dog and pony show tonight.

    A few things to consider:

The corruption that she claimed to fight was members in her own party and from the former governor, who was a mentor to her.

She fights the big oil interests but her husband works for an oil company (and catches fish as a second job).

In addition, due to her supposed 80% approval rating, it is doubtful she would be fighting big oil, a major component of her states economy and source of many jobs.

Plus she teamed up with big oil to fight the declaration of the polar bear as an endangered species, because it was feared it could hurt drilling options.

Would you as a parent of 5, including a pregnant teenage daughter and especially a special-needs infant, be taking on MORE responsibility that takes you AWAY from home? Is it truly in Trig's best interest?

And is it in your children's best interest to parade them in front of the TV cameras? When I become a parent, i cannot imagine bringing a 5 month old infant to a crowded raucous arena of 20,000 people.

Oh but it is OK to bounce the child around his siblings like a hot potato, and to have his next oldest sibling use her saliva as hair gel on the tot (as seen on live TV).

(By the way, seeing trig's condition with clear Down syndrome as well as general listlessness only exacerbates the image that he needs special care, and a mother's bond).

And bringing in the baby daddy- the young guy has become such a tool.

And a word to the "disenfranchised" Hilary Clinton supporters- would you really be swooned by the palin pick and throw all of your basic beliefs and values out the window simply because there is now a woman VP candidate on the other side?

This is but the tip of the iceberg- my fellow bloggers are digging up tons of material. Surf around a bit. Happy Hunting!

    Phone line connection
Question- does anybody here use dialup (not DSL) to access the internet anymore?

Does anybody even know of people who do?

My mother and I have been trying to get my aunt (who lives with my grandparents) to upgrade to cablemodem or DSL for at least 4 or 5 years now. We even bought her a new computer in 2006. She has always either put off doing so or outright refused, and she is online EVERY night for HOURS thereby blocking phone access to my octogenarian grandparents.

I so want to call their phone company and convince them to sell my aunt on DSL or better, even if they have to lie and say they're discontinuing regular service. For the money, my aunt is cheating herself out of bandwidth and power. I have no idea why she continues to ignore our requests and my advice. At the very least, it is an annoyance, at worst, it can be a block ot critical/emergency communication.
